Today is finally the preview of all the photos available for FotoFiber 2012, a Fiberart For a Cause Fundraiser for the American Cancer Society!

I am so excited. As a participating photographer, I’ve been watching the process as photos were selected and assembled. Of course, I knew what mine were, but it was really fun to watch the photos by Karen Stiehl Osborn and Virginia Spiegel go up. I’ve been trying to narrow down my choices for some time now. I want them all!

And, did I mention that there are fun fiber bonuses by some of my favorite fiber artists? Click to see the list of generous donating artists and a few sneak peaks of what could be yours!

Don’t forget to read the directions prior to February 15, the first of the two days for the event. You won’t want to miss out!

On a personal note, my family, like so many others, has been deeply and sadly impacted by cancer, most recently by the death of my 42 year old brother last year. This is a wonderful way to make a donation for a great cause and receive some beautiful, uplifting artwork at the same time. Please share news of this event with others. Thank you for supporting the American Cancer Society!

Dougherty Arts Exhibit Opening

Here are a couple quick snapshots from the opening reception the other night at the Dougherty Arts School. There was a great turn-out. It was fun to see the work of the other instructors.

My diptych “View from the Other Side” can be seen in the center of this first photo.

The exhibit is up until December 20. Drop by and check it out if you have a chance. It’s very nicely hung, and the work is excellent.

You Never Know

We artists need to be ready to discuss our work with passion and professionalism, because we never know when a buyer or collector will wander into our lives.

Recently, my husband and I threw a smallish party/house concert for some friends visiting from overseas. During the evening one of the other guests approached me and asked if a particular piece of mine displayed in the dining room was for sale. I was able to speak intelligently about the work and state the price with no apology or hesitation. The guest happily acquired the work.

Moral: Practice what you want to communicate about your work so you’re ready when an opportunity presents itself!

Eye of the Quilter Exhibit Acceptance!

I’m excited to share that my photograph “Conversation” has been juried into the Eye of the Quilter Exhibit at International Quilt Festival, Houston! The theme this year was Friendship.

This photo features some of my maternal grandmother’s china tea cups, and the very first teapot I ever owned, which I purchased with saved allowance at age 11.

If you are going to be at Festival, drop me a note and we’ll see if we can meet up for coffee, or maybe a glass of wine.

Seth Godin is one of my favorite people online. He invariably has great things to say – things most people really need to hear – about how to approach a creative life, and about running a business.

In today’s blog post he rightly points out that it’s on you to give a great interview when someone takes the time to do so.

Read it, then get out there and market yourself and your art!

Host your blog on your website!

In case you missed it, last week Blogger had a major outage. Posts, comments, and photos were lost. The site was inaccessible for several days. Several self-employed people I knew were left scrambling to get their content out into the world on time.

All this drama could have been avoided if people would only host their own blog on their website. Yes, I know many people want to have a blog *instead* of a website, but they just aren’t the same and shouldn’t be used the same way.

I recommend that my artist clients build their website in WordPress and include a blog that way. The interface is simple to use, and they have so much more control over what happens to their blog.

Unlike a free service, when a hosting company is counting on your fee, they have a built-in incentive to keep your site up and running!
